Hidden Blackpool ice cream shop still uses 121-year-old recipe and only serves one flavour

Away from the hustle and bustle of the town centre is a little family run gem – Manfredi’s Ice Cream – that only serves one flavour

A good ice-cream is a seaside staple, and one Blackpool has in abundance.

But hidden at the end of the illuminations strip, away from the hustle and bustle of the town centre is a little family run ice-cream shop which has been serving its traditional Italian recipe since 1911. Located on the corner of Red Bank Road in Bispham, the recipe has been in their family ever since.

The business started out just down the road in their original store in Leigh, and then they progressed to horse drawn carts, hand carts, and vans. Now in Blackpool, the ice-cream is incredibly popular with holiday makers, and have been known to sell out due to demand in the summer months.

I visited the parlour on Red Bank Road, not in summer, but on a bright November afternoon. I don’t believe in it being too cold for ice-cream, so I excitedly popped my head in to the shop.

They only serve one flavour, which is vanilla, but it certainly isn’t boring. First, you pick how you want your ice-cream. You can have a tub, or a normal cone, or a waffle cone, or a cone with chocolate on. Then you decide if you want a ’99’ or not, (the answer is always yes).

Next you pick from the wide variety of toppings. Pink sherbet, chocolate vermicelli and rainbow sprinkles are free, but they have a whole list of others, including mini caramel fudge chunks, mini marshmallows, crushed Oreo and many more, at a cost of 30p per topping.

Finally, you pick a sauce from a whopping list of 24. These include your usual flavours of strawberry and chocolate, but they also have lime, bubble-gum, Sicilian lemon and cream egg.

Almost overwhelmed with the amount of choice, I opted for a regular sized tub, with salted caramel chips, mini caramel fudge chunks and a salted caramel sauce, which cost me just £2.10.

The ice-cream tasted phenomenal. It was smooth, creamy and the right amount of sweet. You could tell that this was a recipe that had been perfected over many years. The toppings added to the taste, and I was left wishing I’d ordered a bigger tub.
