Some locals have dubbed the hole an entrance to “upside down world”
A “sinkhole” has appeared on the corner of a busy Blackpool street.
The hole in the road has appeared in the past few days, leaving residents surprised and worried by its sudden appearance. The hole is on the corner of Washington Avenue and Stopford Avenue in Bispham, and whilst it doesn’t look too big from the surface, residents say it’s about a foot deep.
Local resident Michelle Traynor spotted the sinkhole on Tuesday (July 19) and says its bigger than it looks. She said: “It seems really wide inside but about foot deep, I’m guessing deeper. I could get my foot in there. The ground around the hole looks like if you walked on it you would fall though.”
Some locals have dubbed the hole an entrance to “upside down world” like in the Netflix show Stranger Things, whilst others have suggested it could be a time capsule, as the hole is already home to a plastic water bottle.
Whilst some residents have been able to see the funny side, others have pointed out that the hole will only get worse. One local resident who spoke to LancsLive’s photographer, said that they felt like the road surrounding the hole was about to give way when they walked past.
Michelle agreed, saying: “I was with my kids and kept pulling them back because it looks like it would give way any minute. It doesn’t help with cars keep going past. It’s on a corner of a some what busy road, and it will get worse.
A spokesperson for Blackpool Council said :” We were alerted to a defect in the carriageway at this location on Monday night. The area was immediately fenced off and made safe ahead of investigation work and repairs being carried out.”
